Sedation Dentistry: Overcome Your Dental Anxiety!

At Joshua Austin, DDS & Associates, we know that walking into a dental office isn’t exactly everyone’s idea of a good time. If you’ve ever felt anxious, nervous, or even downright fearful about going to the dentist, you’re far from alone—and we want you to know that there’s a way forward.
Our dental team in San Antonio is here to make your dental experience as easy and stress-free as possible. For many of our patients, that means turning to sedation dentistry. Whether you’re preparing for a lengthy procedure or simply struggle with dental anxiety, sedation can make a world of difference. In fact, once patients try it, they often tell us, “That wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be!”
So let’s walk through how sedation dentistry works, the options we offer, and what you can expect before, during, and after your visit with us.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is all about helping you feel calm, comfortable, and at ease during your dental appointment. Depending on the type of sedation used, you may remain awake but relaxed, feel drowsy and forget most of the procedure, or drift off into a deeper sleep-like state.
At our San Antonio dental practice, we offer multiple forms of sedation to accommodate different needs and levels of anxiety. Whether you're dealing with dental phobia, a strong gag reflex, or just want to be more comfortable during a complex procedure, sedation dentistry can be an excellent solution.
Types of Sedation We Offer
We know that no two patients are alike, and we take the time to help you find the best option based on your needs, preferences, and health history. Here’s a breakdown of the sedation methods we offer at Joshua Austin, DDS & Associates:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is the lightest form of sedation we offer. It’s a safe and gentle way to help take the edge off your dental visit. You’ll inhale a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small mask over your nose. The effects kick in within minutes, and you’ll feel more relaxed—but still awake and aware.
Once we turn off the gas, the effects wear off quickly, so you’ll be able to drive yourself home or back to work. It’s an easy, low-commitment way to ease dental nerves, and it’s ideal for shorter, simpler procedures.
Oral Sedation
If you’re looking for something a little stronger, oral sedation might be the right fit. You’ll take a prescribed tablet about 45 minutes to an hour before your appointment, which will help you feel deeply relaxed—sometimes even drowsy. Most patients enter a semi-sleep state and don’t remember much of the visit afterward.
Oral sedation is a great option if you want to avoid needles or IVs, and it’s especially helpful for patients undergoing longer treatments or who have moderate to severe dental anxiety. It’s important to note that you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment, as the sedative effects last several hours.
IV Sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation is the deepest level of conscious sedation we offer. With IV sedation, we administer the sedative directly into your bloodstream through a vein, allowing us to achieve a precise level of relaxation quickly—and adjust it as needed during your procedure.
This form of sedation is highly effective for longer or more invasive treatments, such as multiple tooth restorations, extractions, or dental implant placement. You’ll be in a twilight state—still responsive, but completely relaxed and often unaware of the procedure as it’s happening. As with oral sedation, you’ll need a driver and a safe place to rest afterward.
More Than Sedation: Creating a Comfortable Environment
While sedation can make a big difference, we also believe in layering comfort into every part of your visit—because your experience matters.
From the moment you step into our San Antonio dental office, you’ll notice the difference. We always have soft music playing to create a calm atmosphere and help drown out the typical dental sounds that can trigger anxiety. You’ll find TV screens mounted above each chair, so you can tune out and enjoy a favorite show (we’re partial to The Great British Baking Show, but you can pick your own favorite, too!).
We also provide cozy blankets, supportive pillows, and other little comforts to make you feel at home. It’s all part of our mission to help every patient—especially those who have felt overlooked or fearful in the past—feel welcomed, heard, and cared for.
When Sedation Makes the Most Sense
While sedation dentistry can technically be used for almost any procedure, we recommend it most for the following situations:
- Long or complex treatments: If you’re restoring multiple teeth or undergoing full-mouth rehabilitation, sedation can make a lengthy visit feel like it flew by.
- Surgical procedures: Extractions, dental implants, or other oral surgeries are often more comfortable with sedation, both physically and emotionally.
- Patients with dental anxiety: If anxiety has kept you from seeing a dentist for years, sedation offers a chance to take back control of your health.
- Strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb: For patients who struggle with numbing alone, sedation can make treatment possible—and even comfortable.
That said, we don’t usually recommend sedation for very short or simple procedures (like small fillings that take 15–20 minutes). We always take the time to talk through your concerns and make sure the approach is right for your needs.
Breaking the Cycle of Dental Anxiety
One of the most rewarding parts of offering sedation dentistry is seeing the transformation in our patients.
Every day, we meet people who have avoided the dentist for years—sometimes decades—because of fear, bad past experiences, or shame about the state of their teeth. We understand. And we’re not here to judge. We’re here to help.
Sedation dentistry gives us a way to meet you where you are. We can take care of your immediate needs in a way that feels safe and comfortable. And once that first appointment is over, many patients tell us they feel empowered to keep going. They finally believe they can restore their smile—and that it doesn’t have to be a traumatic process.
It’s incredibly common for patients to say after their appointment, “That wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.” For us, that’s the best kind of compliment.
How to Prepare for a Sedation Appointment
If you and Dr. Austin decide that sedation is right for you, we’ll walk you through every step of preparation. Here are a few key things to keep in mind:
- Schedule your appointment early in the day: Since you’ll need to fast from midnight the night before, morning appointments help minimize discomfort.
- Nothing to eat or drink (NPO) after midnight: This is crucial for your safety during sedation. We’ll give you clear instructions on when to stop eating and drinking.
- Arrange a ride and a caregiver: You’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. You may feel groggy or sleepy, and having someone you trust nearby makes all the difference.
We’ll also review your medical history and medications before scheduling any sedation. In rare cases, we may consult with your primary care physician or other specialists to ensure the safest possible care.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Yes—when performed by trained professionals like our team at Joshua Austin, DDS & Associates, sedation dentistry is extremely safe and effective. In fact, it’s used across the country every day for both medical and dental procedures.
We always conduct a thorough review of your health history and current medications, and for most patients—including those with mild to moderate medical conditions—sedation is well tolerated.
For the small percentage of patients with more complex health issues, we may need to take additional precautions or consult your doctor. But in 99% of cases, sedation dentistry is a safe and reliable tool to help you get the care you need without unnecessary stress.
What to Expect After Your Sedation Appointment
The recovery process after sedation is generally smooth and straightforward. Here’s what to expect:
- You’ll feel drowsy or groggy: This is totally normal and usually wears off within a few hours.
- You’ll need to rest: Plan to take the day off and avoid anything that requires focus or coordination.
- No driving or heavy machinery: This includes cooking on the stove, using power tools, or even caring for small children unsupervised.
- Have a caregiver with you: It’s important to have someone you trust nearby to help you get home and stay safe as the sedative wears off.
By the next day, most patients are feeling back to normal—and many are amazed by how easy the whole process felt.
