Caring for Your Invisalign Aligners: Best Practices

August 29, 2025

If you’ve started Invisalign treatment—or you’re thinking about it—congratulations! You’re on your way to a straighter, healthier smile that you can be proud of. At Joshua Austin, DDS & Associates here in San Antonio, TX, we’ve helped countless patients transform their smiles with clear aligners, and one thing we’ve learned is this: caring for your Invisalign aligners properly is key to getting the best results.

I’m Dr. Joshua Austin, and I’ve been working with Invisalign since 2018. Over the years, my team and I have invested countless hours into education, training, and learning new techniques so that we can offer our patients the most effective, comfortable, and efficient treatment possible. Today, I even teach other dentists across the country and around the world about Invisalign—which means I get early access to the newest products, technology, and tips.

That’s great news for you—because in this post, I’m going to share the best practices for wearing, cleaning, and caring for your Invisalign aligners so you can get to your dream smile on time (or even faster).

Why Invisalign Works So Well—When Done Right

Invisalign is one of my favorite treatments to provide because the results can be life-changing. Whether we’re straightening teeth for a more confident smile, correcting your bite, or closing unwanted gaps, Invisalign gives us the tools to move teeth precisely while keeping the treatment nearly invisible.

But—and this is a big “but”—the aligners only work when you follow the plan. That means wearing them as directed, keeping them clean, storing them properly, and avoiding the common mistakes that slow down progress. When you commit to those habits, Invisalign can deliver amazing results in less time than you think.

The #1 Rule: Wear Your Aligners

Let’s start with the golden rule of Invisalign: compliance is king. Your aligners can’t straighten your teeth if they’re sitting in your pocket or wrapped in a napkin. For most patients, we recommend wearing them about 22 hours per day—only taking them out to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush or floss your teeth.

If you wear your aligners less than that, the teeth won’t move as planned, and your treatment could take months (or even years) longer than expected. I’ve had cases that should’ve taken six months stretch out to three years, simply because the aligners weren’t worn consistently. The good news? The opposite is also true—good compliance can actually shorten your total treatment time.

Dr. Austin’s Top 3 Invisalign Care Tips

Over the years, I’ve narrowed Invisalign care down to three essentials that every patient should follow:

1. Wear Them Consistently

This one’s obvious, but it’s also the most common issue we see. Your aligners should be in your mouth unless you’re eating, drinking something other than water, or brushing/flossing. Even short breaks add up, and before you know it, your teeth may not track with the treatment plan.

2. Store Them in Your Clamshell Case

Every patient who starts Invisalign with us gets a sturdy clamshell storage case. If your aligners aren’t in your mouth, they should be in that case—period. Putting them in a napkin, hoodie pocket, or jeans pocket is a recipe for losing or damaging them. And yes, aligners are small enough to accidentally toss in the trash if they’re wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant.

3. Clean Them with Hydrogen Peroxide (Not a Toothbrush)

This one surprises a lot of people—don’t brush your aligners with toothpaste or a toothbrush. The bristles will scratch the plastic, making them more likely to stain and become cloudy. Instead, soak them in 3% hydrogen peroxide (the kind you find in the brown bottle in the first aid aisle) for about 30 minutes a day. This keeps them clear, fresh, and free of buildup.

Common Invisalign Mistakes—and How to Avoid Them

Even with the best intentions, patients sometimes make mistakes that slow progress. Here are the top ones we see:

Not Wearing Them Enough

If they’re not in your mouth, they’re not working. It’s as simple as that. Missed hours mean delayed movement, and delayed movement means longer treatment.

Leaving Them in a Hot Car

Here in San Antonio, summer heat is no joke. Leave your aligners in a parked car, and they can warp or melt—especially when temperatures hit 100°F or higher. Always keep them with you in their case.

Improper Cleaning

Toothpaste, hand soap, and denture cleaners may seem harmless, but they can be abrasive or leave residue that’s unpleasant to taste. Stick with hydrogen peroxide or Invisalign’s cleaning crystals for safe, effective cleaning.

How to Keep Your Aligners Clean and Clear

Keeping your aligners clear isn’t just about hygiene—it’s also about keeping them truly “invisible.” Here’s our recommended cleaning routine:

  1. Daily Soak: Once a day, soak your aligners in 3% hydrogen peroxide for about 30 minutes. This can be while you’re getting ready in the morning or winding down at night.

  2. Rinse Well: After soaking, rinse them under cool water before putting them back in your mouth.

  3. Skip the Toothbrush: Brushing will scratch the aligners, which can trap stains and bacteria.

  4. Use Invisalign Cleaning Crystals for Travel: If you can’t bring liquids (like on a flight), cleaning crystals are a great on-the-go option. Just dissolve them in water and soak your aligners in a glass or travel-safe cup.

Traveling with Invisalign

As someone who travels often, I understand how routines can get thrown off on the road. But with a little planning, you can stay on track:

  • Always Bring Your Clamshell Case: Whether you’re at the airport, on a plane, or in a hotel, this keeps your aligners safe from loss or damage.

  • Pack Cleaning Crystals: TSA won’t let you bring hydrogen peroxide in your carry-on, so these travel-sized packets are perfect for cleaning in a pinch.

  • Use the Invisalign App: Set reminders for aligner changes and daily wear goals, especially if your schedule is packed with flights, meetings, or sightseeing.

What to Do If You Lose or Damage an Aligner

Life happens—dogs chew things, napkins get thrown away, accidents occur. The good news is, a lost or damaged aligner isn’t the end of the world. Here’s what to do:

  • If It Happens Early in the Wear Cycle: Call us right away. We’ll likely need to order a replacement.

  • If It Happens Late in the Cycle: You may be able to move on to the next aligner.

  • If It Happens Mid-Cycle: Try the next aligner—if it fits well, you can continue; if not, we’ll order a replacement.

Ordering a new aligner is quick—we can usually have it in the office within 4–5 days. The key is to let us know immediately so we can keep your treatment on track.

Protecting Your Aligners Between Wears

Your aligners spend most of their time in your mouth, but when they’re not, you want to keep them safe. That means avoiding pockets, purses without cases, and countertops where they can get knocked onto the floor. The clamshell case we provide is designed to:

  • Prevent physical damage from bending or crushing

  • Keep lint, dust, and bacteria away

  • Make it less likely you’ll lose them

If you follow this simple rule—in your mouth or in the case—you’ll avoid most aligner-related mishaps.

Are You a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign works beautifully for many people, but the most successful patients have a few things in common:

  • They can follow a routine. Wearing aligners consistently is non-negotiable.

  • They take care of their appliances. Clean, stored, and handled with care.

  • They’re committed to the process. Even teenagers can get great results—in fact, Invisalign has treated over 10 million teens successfully.

If you can say “yes” to those traits, chances are you’ll be an excellent Invisalign candidate.
