Emergency kits, in general, are an important thing to have, you might have one stored away for bodily injuries, but many people don't think about what can happen to your mouth that would need immediate attention before coming in to see us when an emergency arises. Hopefully- and it's not likely that you'll have to use one- but a dental emergency kit is a good thing to have in your home.
What Should Be In Your Kit
You'll need to be able to accurately see injuries, especially ones that happen in the back! Keeping this in your kit will make things significantly easier in regard to seeing and treating injuries.
Gloves, specifically and only rubber gloves are critical before you start treating an injury.
Cotton Balls, Gauze, and Cotton Swabs in a Sealed Container The swabs are for cleaning an immediate wound while the balls are for excess blood and providing temporary, slight relief to the wound. Lastly, you should also have gauze to use in addition to the cotton balls. You can never have too much of all three of these!
For sterilizing the wound. It is important to keep the injured area as clean as possible.
For severe pain in the tooth such as an abscess or an excruciating toothache due to severe tooth decay- this can buy you time and provide temporary relief until you can come in.
Fractured teeth can leave behind sharp points that can easily cut into the tongue or roof of the mouth. Dental wax provides temporary protection by going over the point of the tooth.
If you are dealing with a crown that has fallen out, it can be placed back on temporarily by filling the inside with Vaseline and putting it back where it fell off.
