If your gums are red, sore, or inflamed, you may find yourself in a great deal of discomfort. In some cases, these symptoms may be an early sign of gingivitis, but in other situations, irritation due to braces or dentures could be the culprit. By following these tips, you can better manage your sore gums on your own at home.
Rinse Out Your Mouth with Salt Water
Salt water rinses are beneficial when suffering from soft tissue injuries in the mouth. This rinse will wash away plaque and bacteria, and it can help with the inflammation that may be causing your soreness. Just make sure that the water isn't too hot, or you could suffer from burns.
Switch to a Soft-Bristled Brush
Using a toothbrush with overly hard bristles could also be the cause of your discomfort. That's why you should only use toothbrushes with soft bristles, and make sure you brush both firmly and gently. Over-aggressive brushing could damage the gums and eventually lead to recession.
Add a Mouthwash to Your Oral Hygiene Routine
Certain mouthwash options can also benefit your gums. Those that contain hydrogen peroxide will fight off bacteria that could lead to gum disease, which often results in soreness and inflammation.
Use an Over-the-Counter Medication
If the previously mentioned tips don't seem to work, try and over-the-counter medication.
Painkillers like acetaminophen can help with discomfort, while ibuprofen fights inflammation. You can also find Anbesol and similar gels at your local pharmacy, and when applied directly to the sore gums, you may be able to find some relief.
