While you're relieving stress throughout the rest of your body, you may be inadvertently cause stress to your teeth. With this in mind, there are some things you should know about the importance of protecting your oral health when you're working out.
Causes of Dental Issues for Athletes
There are many reasons for dental issues. One is that you'll be heavily breathing through your open mouth. This negatively impacts your oral health because it dries out your mouth, reduces saliva flow, causes tooth decay, and creates an environment in which bacteria thrives. Adding a corrosive sports drink to this will make it worse for your teeth.
While you'd think these drinks would be a great way to replace the electrolytes in your body, so you remain hydrated, they contain too much acid. Sipping on these drinks throughout a workout also increases the amount of damaging sugars your teeth are exposed too, making them more susceptible to tooth decay.
You should choose bottled water or coconut water instead. They'll not only keep you hydrated, but coconut water also has anti-inflammatory properties and it also helps balance your glucose and insulin levels.
Exercise Positively Impacts Your Dental Health
Exercise is also good for your health. We know that it is important to have a healthy exercise regimen, however, it's also important for you to have a healthy dental regimen.
To keep your oral health on track you'll need to brush your teeth twice daily – make sure to floss and rinse while you're at it.
