What Can Make Your Dental Bonding Dull

Dental Bonding Joshua Austin, DDS FAGD FACD TX 78249If you've had a tooth get chipped or even had a part of one break off, you're likely to be very self-conscious about your smile. Fortunately, we can repair that broken tooth using dental bonding.

This is a type of resin that is applied to the tooth and then hardened by shining a special type of light on it. The resin bonds to the tooth, making it appear like it was never broken. Dental bonding is very strong and will last for years.

Dental Bonding Can Get Dull Over Time

Unfortunately, over time, dental bonding can start to dull. It may start to look different from the rest of your teeth since it's a new addition to your mouth. Teeth naturally lose their bright whiteness over time.

While good brushing habits will certainly slow that down, it's still likely to happen because of what you eat. We do everything we can to match the bonding color to your teeth, but you may notice that it starts to look a different color over time. Can you do anything about that?

The good news is that yes, you can! Teeth and dental bonding both dull and become discolored because of the same reason. Here are a few of the things you can cut back on to stop bonding from becoming dull:

•  Don't drink coffee. Coffee is one of the biggest causes of dental stains and discoloration.
•  Soda is also a culprit. If you have to have a soda every now and then, drink it through a straw so it doesn't hit the front of your teeth or the bonding.
•  Tea is another drink that can stain your teeth. Again, cut back or avoid it altogether if possible.
•  Some very healthy fruits can even cause discoloration and dullness! If you eat a lot of berries, the juices can start to discolor your teeth and any dental bonding.
