Ways of Decreasing Your Risk of Oral Cancer

Oral Cancer Joshua Austin, DDS FAGD FACD TX 78249Oral cancer is not something any of us wants to deal with. However, if you make sure you come in and see us every six months, chances are, if you do face it, it will get caught early. Oral cancer is one of those cancers that is nearly always treatable when caught in its earliest stages.

This means that you can find it, treat it, and have a good prognosis in the end more often than not. However, if you can avoid getting in the first place, that is always ideal. Here are a few things you can do to lower your risk of developing oral cancer.

How to Lower Your Oral Cancer Risk

First of all, don't smoke. Tobacco is the number one preventable cause of oral cancer. If you smoke, quit now. Hopefully you never started, but if you did, take the time to quit. The sooner you do it, the more your risk of oral cancer can drop.

Second, don't drink. This is another common contributor to oral cancer. It dries out your mouth and can lead to a whole host of problems. The more you drink, the higher your risk.

Take the time to quit drinking now, as again, the sooner you quit, the more your chances drop. Third, make sure to always keep your oral hygiene as a priority.

Something as simple as brushing twice a day, flossing once, and rinsing with mouthwash once per day can help tremendously. Add in coming in to see us twice per year and your chances drop further.

If you want to find out more about what you can do to decrease your oral cancer risk, come in and see us. Ask what your chances are now from what we can tell, and we can tell you ways of bringing that risk down even further.
